Abbott & Costello Meet The Invisible Man (1951)

I’m sure all of you remember the very first Invisible Man sequel, The Invisible Man Returns . That movie starred the voice of Vincent Price and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Price portrayed a slightly prissy owner of a mine who is wrongly accused of murdering his brother. Price has a doctor at the mine shoot himself up with some invisible juice so that he can be free to roam around looking for the “real killers.” While he does this, he also has to hurry up and get it done before the drug makes him crazy. As you might expect, he succeeds in finding the real killers and gets a blood transfusion that turns him back visible.
I rehash all this because Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man rehashes all this. They use virtually the same plot in this “comedic” updating of the Invisible Man films. Of course, this series had already been played for laughs with The Invisible Woman , but I guess Universal felt like they should let the pros take a crack at it, too. In this version, the Vincent Price character is now named Tommy Nelson, a prizefighter who’s wrongly accused of killing his manager. He gets his hands on some invisibility serum and uses it to find the people who really killed the manager. Abbott and Costello assist him in his efforts.
Bud Abbott plays a guy named Bud and Lou Costello plays a guy named Lou in this one. The have just gotten their diplomas from some detective school and are assigned to the night shift at a local detective agency. Lou amuses himself by prowling the office with his Sherlock Holmes deerstalker cap, a pipe and a gigantic magnifying glass, much to Bud’s constant consternation. Suddenly a dude bursts into their office and starts looking out the window while the radio in the office is describing murder suspect Tommy Nelson. Of course the description fits the person who just came into the office and Lou is the only one who notices this.

As usual, Bud is oblivious to his little buddy’s facial contortions, strange noises, and mammoth double takes. Eventually, Tommy tells the boys that he is not guilty of the crime (Riiiight, Juice!) and that he refused to throw a fight to a guy named Rocky Hanlon that a mobster named Morgan was backing. For Tommy’s dirty little double cross, Morgan had Tommy’s manager killed and set Tommy up to take the fall. This would all seem a bit ridiculous, but having spent more than three decades in the fight game myself, I can tell you that sort of stuff goes on everyday.
Bud and Lou decide that this could be their first big case and pretend to help this dude out, all the while intending to rat him out to the cops. They go with him to his girlfriend’s house where her uncle has a lab where he works on his invisibility serum. The United States must be crawling with kooky old scientists who have invisibility juice on standby for any dope who might wander by and be in some kind of trouble. “What’s that? You’re girlfriend thinks you’re cheating on you? Here, have some monocane, if she can’t see you, you must not be having an affair.” “Oh, your kid continues to wet the bed, likes to set fires, and collects Barbie doll heads? Give him a shot of this. It’ll turn him invisible and he should be back on the honor roll in no time.”
This movie actually does a teensy-bit better alluding to the past movies than some of the earlier sequels in that the doctor actually mentions the first invisible man by name and states that the drug made him a whack job. Then we kind of focus in on a framed picture of Claude Raines who is posing for what looks like an actor’s headshot. (I knew it was Claude as soon as I saw that ridiculous rug laying dead atop his head.)

Tommy, whose job is to get punched in the head, ignores the warnings of the doctor and shoots himself up with the invisibility drug and disappears just as the fuzz arrive. Only Lou has seen Tommy become invisible and no one believes him, so they ship him off for an extended scene with a police psychologist. Lou ends up hypnotizing numerous people to sleep in the office and there’s lots of supposedly funny dialogue between him and the shrink. That’s really the problem with these A&C movies. You can tell they were trying to work in their signature spots into the film and since those types of “whacky comedy routines” were their strengths, you can’t really blame them, but man, do they slow an already uninspired and retread of a story to a crawl. Finally the plot lurches back into motion and eventually Bud and Lou decide to help Tommy out.
For reasons that only a boxer with brain damage could fathom, it is decided that the plan to catch the real killers is the following: Lou will pretend to be boxer, Bud will be his manager, and Tommy will be invisible and help Lou in the ring. They’ll get a fight with Morgan’s guy, Rocky Hanlon, so that Morgan will approach them to fix the fight, they’ll agree, then double cross Morgan, knock Hanlon out, wait for Morgan to try and kill Bud and pin it on Lou, but catch him before that and expose him for the dastardly ruffian he surely is. Wow, once I type it out that way and re-read it, I’m amazed at what the human mind can come up with and rationalize as “a good idea.”
Let me break it down as to why this is an idea whose time should never come. You see, in boxing, the fighters have to fight in boxing trunks. Without shirts. As it dawned on me that I was going to have lay eyes on a shirtless Lou Costello, I began to understand why one could make a case for this being a “horror-comedy.” The idea of having to watch Lou’s man-tits jiggle across my 100 inch projection TV (I ain’t going to lie - being rich has its drawbacks) made the breakfast of A&W Cream Soda, Charleston Chews, and ham slices that I had been ingesting while viewing this movie, rumble in my jungle if you smell what I’m cooking.

So we get to see Lou in all his doughy glory, his trunks hiked up to his nipples, just like George Foreman and all the other lard asses who train at Steak & Shake that have their trunks pulled up over their protruding and ill-defined guts. The last twenty minutes of the movie is Lou farting around in the ring getting knocked around by Rocky Hanlon while Rocky Hanlon gets knocked around by phantom punches from an invisible Tommy.
In some of their other monster efforts, it was amusing (sometimes more so as in Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, sometimes less so as in Abbott & Costello Meet The Mummy) to see familiar and deadly serious monsters do battle with the clowning buffoonery of Bud and Lou. Here, it just didn’t matter since we had seen all this stuff before in the regular Invisible Man movies. We’ve all seen the doors slam shut, people doing pratfalls, items moving inexplicably, and even the invisible man getting drunk (shoot, we saw that in The Invisible Man’s Revenge and in The Invisible Woman , not to mention this one). A completely uninvolving movie that seemed much, much longer than its 83 minute running time.
