Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962)

Posted by monsterhunter Under Comedy, Teens on Wednesday Mar 17, 2010

Jimmy Stewart stars as the befuddled old coot trying to cope with his crazy family for a month on the Pacific coast. This mostly unfunny comedy mines all the expected areas of the whole “can’t stand my family, but I love them anyway” school of film with results that are generally less than tepid. Jimmy’s character, Roger Hobbs, endures his children’s various problems while coping with the run down house they’re staying at, but manages to solve all their marital, employment, and self esteem issues with remarkable ease by the time he has to pack everyone back up to St. Louis. The Misadventures of Merlin Jones (1964)

Posted by monsterhunter Under All Reviews, Comedy, Disney, Teens on Wednesday Mar 17, 2010

If this movie let me down at all, it was that there simply weren’t enough misadventures detailed, though even the filmmakers would acknowledge this and immediately respond to American’s insatiable appetite for pointless experiments involving chimps and long-suffering girlfriends by serving up a sequel, The Monkey’s Uncle, only a year later. Mars Needs Women (1967)

Posted by monsterhunter Under All Reviews, Midnite Movies, Science Fiction, Teens on Saturday Feb 27, 2010

The details are almost too terrifying to report: a $25,000 budget, a two week shooting schedule, Tommy Kirk, and a TV movie. That in a nutshell is what we have with Mars Needs Women, a movie that can’t hide the low budget, low star power, and the low wattage script that it suffers from throughout. Read More

Body Moves (1990)

“We have to be awesome if we want to win!” Though rich brat Kevin is clearly a douche and though his dance moves are clearly cribbed from Vanilla Ice, he hits upon the very truth of what Body Moves, and by extension life, is all about. Read More

Kidnapped (1960)

Posted by monsterhunter Under Action, All Reviews, Disney, Teens on Sunday Jan 3, 2010

I had been hoping that Kidnapped was a movie along the lines of Treasure Island – you know something involving a guy with one leg and a murderous little kid that didn’t fret over stabbing some scurvy sea dog in the face when the chips were down. What I got was Oscar-winner (not for this movie obviously) Peter Finch hamming it up as Alan Breck Stewart and Hawaii Five-0’s James MacArthur as David acting all despondent after having to plug some scallywag while he and Stewart were trying to take over a ship. Johnny Tremain (1957)

I had always suspected that those snobby British goons that tried to stifle all our basic human rights by laying a big tax on our imported tea were defeated through the interference of some plucky kids. Read More

In Search of the Castaways (1962)

InSearchOfTheCastawaysPosterJules Verne plus Walt Disney equals really bad special effects and a disjointedly confusing story. Most of the blame surely rests with Disney since I doubt very much that Verne’s novel included an aged and slumming Maurice Chevalier sitting on a fake horse and singing about climbing mountains. I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957)

Posted by monsterhunter Under All Reviews, Horror, Teens on Friday Nov 20, 2009

IWasATeenageWerewolfPosterI Was A Teenage Werewolf never explains why poor old Tony is dispatched with wimpy police issue bullets. And if you think that I just laid a real smelly dog turd of a spoiler on your front lawn there, try to remember that a teenage werewolf whose transformations are triggered by the school bell probably isn’t a prime candidate to reach old age, even in dog years! I mean that sucker is going to be growing fangs and eating teachers and students about what – 14 or 15 times a day? Someone is bound to eventually notice that! Read More

I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957)

Posted by monsterhunter Under All Reviews, Horror, Teens on Friday Nov 20, 2009

IWasATeenageFrankensteinPosterCould someone get Teenage Frankenstein some antiperspirant? It isn’t bad enough that he’s made out of smelly, rotted body parts, but the dude’s got Frisbees as well! Surely if Dr. Frankenstein was smart enough to play God and get his teenage protege up and around, he could at least provide him with the most rudimentary of personal hygiene equipment. After all, you wouldn’t let your Teenage Frankenstein wipe his reanimated ass with his recently stitched on hand would you? Then how could you let him stink the joint up when he’s out strangling hussies? All the police have to do is follow the B.O. back to your secret lab! Read More

How to Make a Monster (1958)

Posted by monsterhunter Under All Reviews, Horror, Teens on Friday Nov 13, 2009

HowToMakeAMonsterPosterThey are the greatest (teenage) monsters in the history of the silver screen. They’ve appeared in countless (one each) classic thrillers. They launched the careers of some of the biggest names in show business history (Michael Landon and some other guys you’ve never heard of). And now, after years (well – one year) in the making these classic monsters finally clash in the greatest, no holds barred, monster mash up ever filmed! (Okay, they never actually fight each other, but they do talk with one another out of make up!) Read More
